Interesting. However, that doesn't mean it makes economic sense. Normally
the DC area might get one good snowfall a year; nothing multi-purpose
equipment like plows and loaders can't handle. And they can be used year
round. Arlington's snow melter(s) would basically sit in the garage 363 days
a year. I wonder what that costs them?

Maybe the snow melters can be used in the off-season as pools to raise rockfish for the Bay, like we have here.

Every few years when the jet stream shifts so that we get a lot of moist air and storms blowing in from the Gulf, the storms are fairly serious [for this region], 12"-15". I've lived in eastern Maryland for over 30 years and have photos of plenty heavy snows. Worst was 1979. We remember because my husband is a teacher. Teachers are at least as thrilled with snow days as their students, especially when the state declares an emergency which doesn't have to be made up at the end of the year.

This year was bad because the storms this week were at least three storms combined, coming in from the South, the West, and the Northwest, plus both the first and second storms became nor'easters, turning around and hitting us again after 'refueling' out at sea. Monday may be more of the same. Online weather maps can't agree what's happening yet.

Some years we get no major snow storms. Those years we usually get ice storms, 1-3" of solid ice covering everything. I'd rather have snow.

Interesting though, Pennsylvania has much more snow than Maryland, yet the PA snow crews were sent to MD to learn how to clear snow quickly and effectively. Go figure.
