Is the external speaker system working? When you turn it on, be it
connected to the computer or not, is there a pilot lamp that indicates
that it is powering up? Can you hear any noises from the speakers
when you turn the unit on? If so, or even if not so, do the
following:

Ensure that the speaker that does not contain the off/on and volume
knobs is connected to the speaker that houses those controls. Now,
with the unit ostensibly turned on, increase the volume control at
least half way to full volume. Touch your finger to the tip of the
plug that inserts into the audio output jack of your computer. You
should now hear a hum or buzz from one of your speakers. If not, your
external speaker system is probably not functioning and it is likely a
fault in the amplifier section, power supply (if the unit is not
powering up) or a broken audio cable. Otherwise, there is some issue
internal to your computer.
