Pengenalan ungkapan 'Linux just work' seharusnya lebih selektif diungkapkan, dan tidak kepada setiap orang (not for everyone). Saya lebih bisa menerima ungkapan dari 'Locutus' yang membuat judul ini. You read about it everywhere on forums, mailing lists and in just about every Linux verses windows flame war. Linux just works is claimed. Then there is the counter claim that Linux didn't do this or that had no drivers. So what is the story here? Does Linux just work or not? Well, it does and it doesn't.
The phrase, just works, is a pretty blanket statement. It has no specific target to refute against. Linux just works you say? It doesn't for me. It does for me. Does not. Does. Does not. Does. Hmmm, I seem to remember those sort of arguments in kindergarten. There are many things which Linux is very good at. Hardware detection and configuration for one. As long as your hardware is supported by the operating system then it "just works". The same as any other operating system. What about software? As long as you stick with supported software supplied by the distribution then it "just works", mostly. Then again, that is the exact same scenario for other operating systems. Linux has bugs, so do other operating systems. Linux can do a lot of things very easily, so can other operating systems. There are some things that Linux can not do. Strange, exactly the same as other operating systems. This "just works" phrase means nothing and can be applied to any operating system by its respective advocates. This phrase can sometime serve to turn people away from something that they were curious about. Instead of running off at the mouth with the too often used "just works" why not instead provide more concrete, provable examples? For example. Linux installation is easier and simpler than other operating systems. Hardware detection for Linux is automatic and extra drivers do not need to be installed. Linux is faster on the same hardware than other operating systems. Linux does not have licensing and DRM problems. Finding and installing Linux programs is simpler than other operating systems. Linux can be customised to look and operate how you want it to look and operate. Phrases like these are provable and much more effective than "just works". For every time somebody claims that Linux "just works" there will be someone else who will say that this printer didn't work or that WIFI kept crashing. The phrase is simply an invitation for a negative reaction. With a little bit of thought other, irrefutable, statements can be made. Then, instead of the other party trying to negate it, their curiosity may increase and who knows, they might like it :) Linux has reached the stage now where it is just as effective and as usable as any other operating system for the average computer user. It can offer much more stimulation for the more advanced user. Linux is also a lot of fun for the tinkerers and those who want to learn how things tick. Linux has programs to do any form of computing work that other operating systems can do. Are these programs easier? Not necessarily easier nor harder. Just different. Other operating systems can seem to be easier because people are used to them. It doesn't mean that they are. For somebody who has been driving a car all their life riding a motorcycle is hard. However, once they learn to ride that motorcycle it is no harder than driving a car and can be just as much, or more, fun. So are you the sort of person who repeatedly uses the "just works" phrase? I suggest you rethink your strategy. What can you use in place of "just works"? Give your suggestions in the comments below. Maybe the "just works" phrase could be like a Nike slogan as in "Linux, just do it 'cause it just works" :) "I get paid to support Windows, I use Linux to get work done."
