I see.  The problem here is that I'm an idiot.  I read the users
manual which says

 This opens the conkeror project web page in a new buffer.

 C-u C-u n 12 RET

and didn't notice that the description came after the keystrokes, not
before.  

On my TODO list:
Pay attention to what I read.

It's still mentioned in C-hb.
Like NEWS said, I doubt I'd use split much, if at all.  I was just
playing around when I noticed split didn't work.

Apparently, that was it.  I did a "touch .conkerorrc" and the error
went away.

Well, I really only moved my .mozilla directory; I didn't delete it.
