Thanks, John and Axel The issue was that Conkeror would stop dead on its tracks whenever it saw or ä or etc.
The suggested solutions were to move to a later XULRunner than 1.9.2.23 and a later Conkeror; or failing that change to a different profile. I will keep them in mind if the problem recurs; it seems to have been cleared by a reboot, which I had to do for unrelated reasons. I am interested in how a different profile might be relevant.
