I tried this approach and it works very well. This extension does not
allow arbitrary URL rewrites, but for my purposes it is good enough.
It also works fine with Conkeror, but I had to download it to a local
file using wget before being able to install it.

It's also nice to maximize HTTPS use as a side effect, in particular
on my laptop which sometimes runs in open networks.
