The appearance and behaviour are now good enough for me to suggest
that it should be enabled by default. Thanks, John, for your previous
suggestions in this regard.
I was tempted to generalise this into a third minibuffermode; putting
the management of the UI components in minibuffer.js and leaving just
the management of the content in hints.js. However I couldn't come up
with another compelling use for the feature and the implementation
would be a little more complicated, so I left it specific to hints.

Hi David,
I'm reviewing this latest incarnation right now and evaluating our
options. I still like the idea of this feature, and have included
resolution of issue343 as a goal for the 1.0 release as a strong "maybe".
The shadow-label approach to the input sizing problem is very creative,
but quite honestly it makes me cringe to think of adding that much
complexity to the minibuffer for the sake of a small effect. I would like
to rule it out as an option.
I have at least one idea for a different approach that I would like to
investigate, so I will post a followup after I have checked it out.
