TL;DR: Mystery solved: It's a xulrunner bug. :-)

Well, this removal caused one bug: xulrunner is the only Mozilla
software which has not yet been ported to the some new stuff, so
although the run-mozilla.sh removal may be intentional, xulrunner's
behaviour is not intentional:
