I've been reading Lance Banning's book, The Sacred Fire of Liberty, which argues persuasively that Madison was fairly consistent throughout his career in his support for some degree of increased national power while retaining primary power in the states (and thus rejects the claim that Madison had one set of views at the time of the convention and co-writing the Federalist, and another set as a member of Congress and after). My question is whether anyone on the list knows of reviews, articles, or books that seek explicitly to counter or refute Banning's claims about Madison (and by extension, other members of the founding generation who were moderate federalists or anti-federalists).
