Yes, that's more or less what I'm currently doing. However, this is not the same. A release tarball is not just a snapshot from the repository but something that includes a ready-made configure script to reduce the build-time dependencies. Try "make dist" in your connman tree and have a look at the contents of the generated .tar.gz.
