Plowden & Smith Limited is the largest fine art and antique conservation 
company in the UK.  Established in 1966, it has expanded over the years to 
incorporate a wealth of specialisations.

We are looking to employ a textile conservator to help grow our textile 
department at our Wandsworth workshop. The work will include preventive care 
for three-dimensional objects, examination and technical analysis, 
documentation, mount making and practical treatment of objects, both in the 
conservation studio and on site.

The successful candidate will be responsible for the day to day running of the 
Textile Conservation Department, working closely with the Head of Conservation 
and the Director - Client Services.



As an independent conservation practice we are often required to undertake 
challenging projects and the successful candidate will be expected to work on a 
wide range of objects, have the ability to work alone or as part of a team, be 
good at problem solving and decision making. They will also be expected to be 
responsible for the organisation and maintenance of the textile studio and its 
equipment. Therefore an excellent knowledge of materials and their properties 
is crucial.

 The successful candidate must demonstrate proficiency and commitment to high 
quality and appropriate conservation treatments. He/she will also assist with 
the maintenance of departmental records through accurate written and 
photographic documentation

The candidate must be flexible in approach with a proven track record of 
working to tight deadlines whilst maintaining a high standard of work. They 
must be able to work in a team as well as being self-motivated.



Duties Include:



*             Produce reports and estimates for work in the department

*             Working with the other departments and the head of conservation 
on multi-disciplinary projects, if required to do so

*             Producing quality work, on time and to tight deadlines

*             Writing condition and treatment reports

*             Keeping a digital photographic record of work

*             Keeping up to date with new developments in the field

*             Maintaining good housekeeping, tidiness and careful management of 
resources

*             Working on site as well as in the workshop, contexts could 
include major galleries, museums, private homes, heritage sites and storage 
facilities

*             Working abroad for short periods should this be required

*             Providing practical conservation advice and guidance

*             Assisting in monitoring and managing resources



Essential Criteria:

*             Minimum of 3 years post graduate experience in conservation

*             An extensive knowledge of materials and their properties

*             Organisational ability and self-motivation

*             The ability to work as part of a team

*             Good communication skills with colleagues and clients

*             Excellent command of written and spoken English

Desirable criteria:

*             Good working knowledge of Word and Excel

*             Clean and current driving licence





Salary Range:

Competitive - negotiable depending on experience.
