*Survey on the Application of Polysaccharide Gums in the Conservation
Treatment of Photographs*

West Lake Conservators in Skaneateles, NY will be conducting an
experimental research into the application of polysaccharide gums for the
cleaning of supports of photographic crayon enlargements. Crayon
enlargements often present severe overall discoloration of the support or
staining. Frequently the support is brittle and the applied media is water
sensitive, ruling out aqueous washing as an option for treatment. Our
research will focus specifically on crayon enlargements mounted on canvas.

Conservators have in the last few years successfully used a technique of
controlled introduction of moisture using rigid polysaccharide gums. The
gum layer also absorbs deterioration byproducts, allowing for a very gentle
form of cleaning. The use of this method as it applies to photographic
materials has been gaining momentum but is fairly under-researched.

We are reaching out to colleagues to undertake a very short survey on their
experience with polysaccharide gums in treating photographic materials. We
appreciate your time is valuable and are most grateful for your
contribution to the project.
