I am preparing a 1967 Ungaro dress for exhibition. The dress is wool jersey with synthetic leather trim, possibly vinyl. The trim consists of a back yoke, front button tab, small pocket tabs and larger elbow patches. There is also a belt with loops. The synthetic leather is composed of a woven substrate with a red coating. The coating is now desiccated and cracking in varying degrees. The parts in the poorest condition show the substrate between the cracks.
In addition the belt is misshapen. It is backed with an unknown interlining material and a thin lining of real leather. The leather is desiccated and brittle. The adhesive which originally attached the edges of the leather to the belt is desiccated causing the leather to curl out at the edges. Has anyone worked with these materials and been able to stabilize and improve their appearance? I'm especially vexed regarding the belt. -- Marjorie Jonas Assistant Conservator Museum @ FIT Seventh Avenue at 27th St. Rm.
