Hi Rebecca, William is correct in everything he says below, and outlines the two typical approaches to accomplish what you are trying to do.
The only thing I will add is that the mylar loop around one of the covers is now typically done with polyethylene rather than mylar. This is because polyethylene is a softer plastic, and the mylar version can have sharp endges. The polyethylene is also a bit stretchier so it is easier to get it taught around the cover. We sell what we call "Polyethylene Strap" for exactly this purpose. The narrow width versions are used for wrapping around books and pages to keep them open on display, and the wider straps (typically the 2") is used for labeling and bar coding. Another advantage of the polyethylene is that rather than the loop being secured with pressure sensitive tape, it is easily welded into a loop and trimmed with an impulse welder. Google "impulse bag welder" and you will find one of these usually for about $30.
