HAVE YOU SEEN THIS GLASS MAN/WOMAN/COW/HORSE?

Dear Colleagues,

I am working at a project at the German Hygiene Museum in Dresden, Germany. We want to examine so called “Glass Men” and “Glass Women” which were produced in the Museum and sold worldwide. The production started in the 1920s and ended in the early 2000s. A lot of them were sold to Eastern Europe (due to the fact that Dresden was part of the GDR) and communist Asia, but also to Western Countries in Europe and North- and South America. They were presented in Museums of Natural Science or in Medical Institutes as teaching aids. We weren’t able to track them all down yet. Now I hope to find some through the conservation community.

The life-sized figures are made of plastics and metal. The skin is transparent, so you can see the organs, the skeleton and blood vessels. The organs were made to be illuminated and there were audio recordings with explanations. Besides women, men and torsos of a pregnant women, there were also cows and horses.

Here are some examples:

If you know about one or more of these figures, please let me know!
