In an effort to predict colour changes on a wooden sculpture, I am seeking information on the effects of unfiltered daylight on yellow cedar ...
Darker woods will lighten and pale woods will darken over time, and yellow cedar will darken. The color change begins when the surface is first exposed, and also develops in darkness with oxidation. The color will become warmer and more saturated if varnished. For many woods, a freshly prepared surface exposed to bright sun for a day will show an initial change, and be most noticeable if part of its surface has been shielded from light. There is a gradient of color change through the thickness of wood that develops over decades, but most occurs at the surface. Some might object to the changing color, while others appreciate it as an indicator of age. All outdoor weathered wood will eventually become silver /gray. -- Hugh Glover http://www.williamstownart.org/ ****** Unsubscribe by sending a message to [email protected] Archives through August 2016 at http://cool.conservation-us.org/byform/mailing-lists/cdl/ Archives from September 2016 onward at https://www.mail-archive.com/[email protected]/
