EAST MEETS WEST is a five-day training workshop facilitated by the paper
conservator Keisuke Sugiyama (Japan). Mr Sugiyama worked for eight years as a
senior conservator of Japanese paintings in the Hirayama Studio, at the
Department of Conservation and Scientific Research at the British Museum in
London.
Workshop participants will learn about traditional Japanese materials, glues
and tools. In addition, training in lining techniques using a karibari will be
offered, including both practical application as well as the theoretical
knowledge underlying this technique.
The aim is to provide workshop participants with a better under-standing of
Japanese materials and techniques in order to facilitate their integration into
existing conservation practice.
The workshop also offers a platform for the exchange of knowledge about paper
conservation between Far Eastern and Western cultures. This is a unique
opportunity to meet a Japanese hyogu master and conservator. Every participant
will receive their own set of Japanese tools to allow for the immediate
application of newly acquired techniques and to facilitate prompt integration
into their daily practice.

We are looking forward to hearing from you!
