I am writing to announce the sad news that Christopher Clarkson died last
night. I had seen him last Monday and although weak, he seemed stable and much
as he had been for some weeks, but his condition suddenly deteroriated two days
ago and he was taken by ambulance to the hospital, by which time apparently he
was all but unconscious, and died there shortly after midnight last night.

Chris was the pre-eminent figure in the world of book and manuscript
conservation and the history of bookbinding. His wide interests, extraordinary
capacity for hard work, his thoroughness and endless curiosity, as well as his
remarkable manual skills, gave him a stature in the field that it will be hard
to equal. He taught and lectured in many countries across the world and will be
remembered as an inspiring teacher and an unequalled source of knowledge. He
will be greatly missed.
