"I have been asked to restore a "one-of-a-kind" book. It is folio size, bound
in full calf with raised bands and a title in gold in one of the compartments.
The leather and silk doublures are beautiful. The text block consists of 62
window mats glued back to back. There is a hinge on one long side of each
"sandwich," so that the collection could be bound into the leather case.

Here is the challenge: On the face of each window mat is pressed organic
material, adhered to the boards ca. 1895 with what appears to be a hide glue.
They are samples of plants from the Holy Land, each of which is mentioned in
the Bible. The Bible reference for each specimen is written in iron gall ink on
the mats.

How do I keep this organic material from detaching from the substrates on which
they are mounted. The glue is dry and bits and pieces are lost every time the
book is opened. One expert recommended wheat paste with, when necessary, some
light weight mending tissue. Any other ideas? Thanks."
