This presentation will focus on an early 16th-Century Tudor portrait of
Catherine of Aragon by an unknown artist belonging to a private collection. The
portrait was recently treated in the Conservation and Technology Department at
The Courtauld Institute of Art. Another version owned by Lambeth Palace, which
was recently restored as part of ‘Making Art in Tudor Britain’ project at the
National Portrait Gallery, will also be introduced as it is firmly accepted to
have a close relationship with this painting.

The presentation will offer an in-depth and comparative technical study on
these two paintings. This focus aims to provide a glimpse into a workshop
practice that was commonplace in England in this period. Additionally, the
presentation will establish how the close relationship between these two
portraits affected the decisions made during conservation treatment, especially
in terms of re-integrating the major loss.
