The National Archives and Records Administration recently conducted a
60-day pilot program on the use of biodegradable nitrile gloves in our
research rooms in St. Louis, MO; College Park, MD and Washington, DC. We
temporarily suspended the use of cotton gloves except for those researchers
with sensitivity to nitrile. We are currently assessing the results of the
pilot and collecting feedback from both staff and researchers. We
initiated the pilot primarily because we believe the biodegradable nitrile
gloves offer a cost savings over cotton gloves and are safer than cotton
gloves for handling photographic materials. We would like to hear the pros
and cons from other institutions with experience using biodegradable
nitrile gloves. Thank you!
