Icon Internship, Conservation of Ancient Egyptian Coffins (Marlay Intern) 6 months Internship Location: The Fitzwilliam Museum Bursary: £ 8,500
This internship has been made possible by the generous support of the Fitzwilliam Museum Marlay Group. Background to the Fitzwilliam Museum and Ancient Egyptian Coffin Project: This internship is hosted by the Fitzwilliam Museum which was founded in 1816 and holds the art collections of the University of Cambridge. The Museum cares for more than 500,000 objects of national and international importance across five curatorial departments: Paintings, Drawings and Prints, Applied Arts, Antiquities, Coins and Medals, and Manuscripts and Printed Books, www.fitzmuseum.cam.ac.uk/. This placement will be based in the Department of Antiquities, which holds a world class collection of ancient Egyptian material. The department has been carrying out a conservation and research project focusing on the Museum's ancient Egyptian coffins for a number of years, www.fitzmuseum.cam.ac.uk/research/ancient-egyptian-coffins. This project has already produced the highly successful Death on the Nile: Uncovering the Afterlife of Ancient Egypt exhibition and exhibition catalogue, the related specialist workshop and international conference, and is building towards a major digital publication of curatorial and conservation research that is due to be launched in Autumn 2018. The internship opportunity: This internship will primarily focus on the conservation of four coffins that are part of the Ancient Egyptian Coffin Project. Two of the coffins have never been on display and the fragile and fragmentary condition of all four makes handling for research difficult, thus severely limiting the accessibility. The project aims to change this situation by photographing and examining the coffins, stabilising them and improving their storage. It will then be possible to carry out further research on this material and prepare it for display. The intern will be encouraged to take responsibility for work on specific objects and will have the opportunity to develop experience working on painted wood and cartonnage. With support and training, the intern will also be involved in the technical examination of the coffins, this may include; Visible-light Induced Luminescence (VIL), UV imaging, x-radiography, RTI photography, XRF analysis. The intern will help to feed this information into the digital publication. There will be opportunities to present aspects of the work to colleagues and to the public. In addition to working on the coffin project, the intern will be involved with other conservators in aspects of the Museum's collection care programme. Specific training and work based activities for this internship will be: - to document and treat 4 ancient Egyptian coffins - to improve storage and assess the material for future display - to feed data from the examination of the coffins into the Ancient Egyptian Coffins Project - to get experience working with various analytical techniques Applicant requirements: This internship is suitable to applicants with a recognised conservation qualification. Experience with archaeological material or painted surfaces is desirable. The applicant must be highly motivated, reliable and with strong IT skills. The successful applicant will be required to complete security checks prior to the commencement of the internship.
