Calls for abstracts/proposals The AIC Health and Safety Committee is pleased to pass along the following announcements from our colleagues in the American Industrial Hygiene Association and the Washington Conservation Guild. If you are submitting an abstract for next year’s AIC Annual Meeting, consider also submitting to one or both of these conferences.
Announcement 1: Accepting Abstracts for the 2017 Fall Professional Development Seminar The Potomac Section of the American Industrial Hygiene Association, the Washington Conservation Guild and the Smithsonian Institution’s Office of Safety, Health and Environmental Management will once again collaborate with the Lunder Conservation Center to host the second annual Professional Development Seminar, building upon last year’s theme: Control of Health and Safety Hazards in Museums, Historic Sites, Conservation Treatment and Collection Care. Wednesday, 1 November 2017 9:00 am – 5:00 pm McEvoy Auditorium Smithsonian American Art Museum G and 8th Streets, NW, Washington DC We are now accepting abstracts which would focus on controlling health and safety risks from preparing, treating, managing, and exhibiting artistic, historic and natural science collections as well as abating structural hazards and responding to disasters within their facilities. Examples of abstract topics include: Safety challenges in gallery exhibit installation, exposure assessments and remediation of unique hazards in museum collections, hazardous material abatement in historic houses, health and safety risks of conservation treatments or chemical hygiene for the conservator’s workspace, and preparedness and emergency response in collections. We are looking for 20-30 minute presentations/case studies. Co-presentations by IH/Safety and Conservation/Collection Care professionals are encouraged. Announcement 2: AIHA National Conference, May 21-23, 2018 Our AIHA Health and Safety colleagues are organizing presentation sessions dedicated to Museums, Historic Sites, Collection Care Risk Management for their National Conference, May 21-23, 2018, Philadelphia. AIC members are encouraged to submit an abstract dealing with a health/safety/environmental issue in a conservation project or similar idea.
