Reporting to the Head, Library Conservation Center, the Paper Conservator (PC) performs and coordinates conservation treatments of the Library's unbound, non-book paper collections, works of art on paper, unbound manuscripts, posters, maps, and ephemera. Working collaboratively within Preservation and broadly across other Library departments, the PC independently proposes and completes a wide range of paper conservation treatments and performs a variety of conservation support and department activities. Conforming to the American Institute for Conservation of Artistic and Historic Works (AIC) Code of Ethics and Standards of Practice, the PC independently examines and analyzes collection items, prepares written reports and photographic documentation for treatment proposals and completed treatments; performs treatments; designs and creates housings; assists with the safe handling, packing, and transport of items; supports labeling and collection identification; and regularly liaises wi th curators, librarians, and other library personnel at all levels. The PC works closely with the Collections Conservator on a variety of collections conservation and support activities, and assists with Preservation Studio and department functions. Supporting UCLA Library's mission to empower and inspire communities of scholars and learners to discover, access, create, share and preserve knowledge, the Preservation Program leads the Library in the stewardship of its collections, helping to ensure ongoing access to the intellectual record and the safekeeping of artifacts entrusted to the UCLA Library in all formats required by contemporary scholars. Preservation Program personnel coordinate and manage preservation operations of the Library, including conservation treatment and rehousing, environmental monitoring, disaster planning and response, library binding and digital reformatting. Preservation's seven full-time staff, along with our interns and students, work collaboratively with all library units to plan and initiate new activities and services in response to library needs, emerging technology, research, and developments in the preservation community. The Library Preservation Studios are located in Powell Library at the ce nter of the UCLA campus. This location unites the core areas of our expertise: the Library Conservation Center, a state-of-the-art conservation lab providing for care and treatment of paper-based collections, from rare books, manuscripts, and archives to reference and circulating collections; the Audiovisual Preservation Studio, equipped and staffed to enable access and preservation of the Library's unique audiovisual collections in a variety of audio, video, and film-based formats; and the Preservation Review and Administration unit, responsible for the overall care and security of library materials through policies, procedures and monitoring activities.
