The British Library leads and collaborates in growing the world’s knowledge 
base. The Collection Care department, which comprises some 40 people working in 
Conservation, Conservation Science and Preventive Conservation, is responsible 
for the care of one of the largest, richest and most diverse research 
collections in the world.

The Preventive Conservation team seeks to minimise risks to collections in 
storage, transit and use by providing best practice advice, support and 
expertise in order to improve the longevity, stability and accessibility of 
those items. In this role you will support disaster preparedness, collection 
care awareness training and coaching and quarantine activities across our sites 
in St. Pancras and Boston Spa, West Yorkshire plus providing support to other 
Preventive Conservation work programmes as required.

You will need a degree in book, paper or archives conservation studies or 
equivalent experience, skills and knowledge. You will have recent practical 
hands-on experience conserving library/archive collections and a broad 
knowledge of preventive and practical conservation approaches and risk 
management/assessments.

You will have proven experience of successfully planning and managing 
collection care projects and understand the need to prioritise tasks in order 
to meet deadlines. You will have a knowledge and understanding of emergency 
planning and incident response best practice.

You will have strong interpersonal and communication skills and be able to 
develop good working relationships and work constructively across the wider 
organisation. You will need to be able to demonstrate experience of training 
staff and/or volunteers in aspects of collection care and/or preventive 
conservation.
