Assistant Paintings Conservator

The American Museum of Natural History in New York City seeks to hire an 
assistant painting conservator to work as a member of a team with 3-4 objects 
conservators to treat six fully-painted monumental totem poles for 
reinstallation in its historic Hall of Northwest Coast Peoples. The position is 
an IMLS funded 16-month position and would start as soon as possible.

The duties and responsibilities will include the following:
*             Undertake close examination, documentation and treatment, 
consisting of structural stabilization and removal/ reduction of previously 
applied surface coatings to reveal the paint below the coatings.
*             Perform scientific analysis, such as pigment identification, as 
necessary.
*             Take part in consultation activities with native and scholarly 
experts regarding the Hall renovation.
*             Carry out routine lab maintenance duties
*             Help prepare content for Communications, website/blog and 
professional publications

Qualifications:
The successful candidate
*             Will have completed study at a recognized graduate program in 
conservation.
*             Will have a minimum of 3 years post-graduate museum conservation 
experience.
*             Will have ability to work on scaffolding/lift for a portion of 
the project.
*             Will have treatment experience with full range of coating 
reduction options, including modular cleaning, gels, micro-emulsions, in 
addition to solvent mixtures.
*             Will have extensive experience with all forms of visual and 
digital documentation.
*             Will have strong written, verbal and interpersonal communication 
skills.
*             Will have demonstrated ability to work smoothly in a group.
