Conservator (Textiles)

The National Museum of African American History and Culture, located on the 
Mall in Washington DC with off-site storage in Maryland, is seeking an 
experienced textiles conservator that will be responsible for the care, 
preservation and technical research on all textile objects within the museum’s 
19-21st Century collection.  The textiles conservator will have knowledge and 
experience with conservation and collection maintenance techniques and 
procedures as well as current exhibition and display practices. The incoming 
conservator will create protocols and procedures for safe handling and storage 
of the textiles collection, will do testing and analysis for research and 
understanding of materials, will create mounts and mannequins for exhibition 
display of textiles and costumes, will be knowledgeable on current museum 
practices and perform treatments in a variety of media with experience treating 
and preserving modern synthetics.

The applications that meet the basic qualifications will be evaluated further 
against the following criteria (to be found on the applicant’s resume):

o   design, propose, document, and complete proposed conservation treatments on 
a wide variety of textile materials within the collection;

     *   provide care, preservation and research on all textiles within the 
Museum's collections;
     *   research textiles within the collection, explore artist's methods and 
generate scientific data on the properties of the materials;
     *   provide preventative care measures such as monitoring and evaluating 
environmental controls, integrated pest management, and emergency preparedness, 
response and recovery of collections, product testing and quality control; and
     *   provide training of staff, allied professionals, interns, fellows, 
volunteers and the public.
