Time Sensitive - Heinrich Winkelmann Postdoctoral Fellowship of the
Deutsches Bergbau-Museum Bochum, Research on plastic degradation in museum
objects

Deutsches Bergbau-Museum Bochum
Bochum, Germany

The Deutsches Bergbau-Museum Bochum (DBM) offers yearly two postdoctoral
fellowships for projects related to its research interests. For the first
time, the fellowship is open to candidates aiming to research the natural
degradation of polymers in museum objects and help develop conservation
strategies for these materials - one of the research foci of the Materials
Science Research Section of the DBM (
http://www.bergbaumuseum.de/en/research/research-areas/material-science).
The preparation of an application for third-party funding for an extended
research project at the DBM can be a part of the research stay and is
specifically supported. The call is open to applicants from all countries
with a background in chemistry, conservation science, materials sciences
and related disciplines. Prior knowledge of German is desirable but not
necessary.

Eligible candidates interested in applying with a proposal on polymer
research are warmly encouraged to contact Dr. Elena Gomez Sanchez at
[email protected] when formulating their proposals. The
submission period for the current call is now open and closes on December
8th, 2017. The fellowship will be announced in the next days on the museum
website; due to the tight deadline interested applicants are however
encouraged to get in touch as soon as possible.

The fellows have the opportunity to use the research infrastructure of the
DBM. For example the Montanhistorische Dokumentationszentrum (montan.dok)
including the records of the mining archive but also the collections,
scientific libraries and the material science laboratory of the DBM.
Besides this, the DBM closely cooperates with the Department of History and
the Department of Archaeological Studies at the Ruhr University Bochum as
well as with the section Applied Material Science at the TH Georg Agricola
University to Bochum. The fellows are expected to participate actively in
the events and research discussions of the DBM, the Ruhr University Bochum
and the TH Georg Agricola University to Bochum. Research results of the
fellowship should be published in Der Anschnitt or in Metalla.

Successful applicants need to have a PhD degree in history, archaeology,
archaeometry, material science or related disciplines. The fellowships will
be awarded for three months and will include a grant of 2,000 Euros per
month and free accommodation nearby the DBM.

Please send in your application - in German or English - by the 8th of
December 2017 including the following documents:
