The Library Collections Conservation Discussion Group (LCCDG) of the Book and
Paper Group (BPG) is pleased to announce the 2018 session topic, MATTERS AT
HAND: THE EVOLUTION OF PRIORITIZATION AND STAFFING IN LIBRARY CONSERVATION
LABS. Conversations with BPG colleagues at the 2017 meeting in Chicago revealed
a common interest in how library conservation practice is changing in the 21st
century. Fellow conservators shared concerns about adapting to shifting
institutional priorities for the types of materials treated, and about the
challenges such changes present to traditional models of staffing and divisions
of labor in library conservation labs.

In preparation for the 2018 session, the LCCDG co-chairs seek individuals to
present on the big picture implications and the specific issues surrounding
these concerns. In a 5- to 10-minute presentation, prospective speakers are
encouraged to explore the topic from multiple angles, including but not limited
to:

  * The decline of traditional book repair in libraries and an increased
emphasis on treatment of special collections and unique/rare materials.
  * Reconsidering the conventional division of work between conservators,
technicians, interns, and student workers.
  * The Special, the General and Everything In-Between: How might treatments
vary based on how materials are classified? Are we still grappling with these
divisions?
  * What previously established practices, workflows, and models of staffing
are no longer effective in your lab? What makes sense now? What does it look
like going forward?

Presentations will be followed by a panel discussion and question-and-answer
session with the audience. We are looking for a variety of perspectives and
experiences, so if you are willing to be considered as a speaker, please
contact us with a short description of your proposed talk by Monday, November
6, 2017.
