Conservation & Exhibitions Technician Starting Salary Range: $16.91-$23.25 per hour (roughly USD33,000-45,000 per annum) Full Time Schedule: Mon – Fri, 8:30am – 5pm Location: Baltimore, MD
General summary/purpose: The Conservation and Exhibitions Technician will provide basic to medium level conservation treatments and housing solutions for the Sheridan Libraries and Museums general and special collections paper-based materials. The Conservation and Exhibition Technician will also provide a wide variety of skilled duties in the fabrication, preparation, production and installation of library exhibitions. This position will report to the Senior Conservator in the conservation laboratory. The Sheridan Libraries and University Museums are strongly committed to diversity. Specific duties & responsibilities: Performs basic repairs and other conservation treatments determined appropriate by staff conservators on paper-based library and archival materials, from both special and general collections. Design and fabricate appropriate cradles and mounts in preparation for exhibits throughout the university libraries and museums. Assists with exhibition installation and regularly scheduled environmental monitoring. Documents conservation work with written and photographic reports. Constructs a variety of protective housings such as clamshell boxes, phase-boxes, folders and encapsulations. Participates in environmental monitoring and disaster preparedness and recovery. Assists conservators with housekeeping, surveys and training of students and interns. Assists conservators with laboratory maintenance and ordering of supplies and equipment. Participates in outreach programs of the Sheridan Libraries and Museums. Performs other duties in support of the preservation of the collections as needed. Other duties assigned. Qualifications Minimum qualifications (mandatory): High school diploma/GED required. Three years related experience required. Additional education can be substituted for experience. Special knowledge, skills, and abilities: Mountmaking experience with acrylic sheet (Plexiglass, Vivak, etc.) Experience with general hand tools and woodworking machinery (drill press, bandsaw, sanders, etc.) preferred. Ability to work with light solvents and to use standard bookbinding tools and equipment. Knowledge of word processing, spreadsheet, database, and photo editing software. Excellent organizational skills, attention to detail and accuracy while demonstrating the ability to work independently or as a team member and prioritize multiple time-sensitive tasks. Excellent hand-skills, attention to details, and problem-solving ability. Excellent oral and written communication and interpersonal skills. Ability to work efficiently while maintaining conservation standards. Ability to meet deadlines and coordinating workflows. Adherence to the AIC code of ethics. Preferred qualifications: Bachelor’s degree in a related field or equivalent combination of training and experience strongly preferred. Minimum of 2 years’ experience working in a book and/or paper conservation lab in a research library or museum setting strongly preferred. Experience preparing library materials for exhibitions including: measuring, matting, mountmaking, and installation experience preferred.
