Description of Work:
The State Archives of North Carolina maintains a conservation lab for
treatment of the documentary materials in its custody. The Conservation Lab
of the Collections Management Branch seeks a Conservation Technician to
perform a variety of basic conservation treatments on archival material and
participates in a wide range of preservation activities to optimize the
long-term care of the State Archives of North Carolina collections. Duties
may include but are not limited to:

-Perform basic conservation treatment to archival materials. Treatments may
include but are not limited to surface cleaning, mold remediation, washing,
de-acidifying, flattening, and mending.
-Create custom housings for archival materials in various formats following
guidelines and procedures.
-Assist in preparing and stabilizing materials for exhibits and loans. This
includes constructing protective enclosures or reinforced backings,
matting, framing, creating proper supports for both books and paper
materials, and assisting in packing, transport, and installation/
de-installation of exhibits.
-Stabilize records prior to digitization.
-Assist in a wide range of preservation and preventative conservation
activities and closely collaborates with staff to optimize collection care.
These activities include stacks maintenance, monitoring environment
conditions, pest management and disaster preparedness, response, and
recovery activities.
-Participate in preservation projects, collection inventories, and
collection surveys to determine conservation or preservation needs for
collections.
-Contributes to the maintenance and organization of the conservation lab.
Keeps work space and storage areas orderly and functional; assists
maintaining specialized equipment; understands and follows safe laboratory
practices. Participates in lab management activities, including maintaining
inventory of supplies.
