Instructor for Historical Book Structures Practicum (Winterthur, DE and Buffalo, NY)
The Library and Archives Conservation Education (LACE) consortium at the Conservation Center of the Institute of Fine Arts, New York University; the Winterthur/University of Delaware Program in Art Conservation; and the Art Conservation Department at the State University of New York College at Buffalo seeks a qualified, experienced instructor to teach an annual summer course, Historical Book Structures Practicum, for an inter-program cohort of approximately five graduate students majoring in library and archives conservation. The four-week course will familiarize students with commonly extant, historical bookbinding structures representative of the development of the Western codex through lectures, readings, and traditional bookbinding practice, with an emphasis on producing historical book models and developing traditional binding skills. Bookbinding projects might include the following: Limp vellum and/or paper binding structures Multi-quire Coptic binding Gothic binding Early ledger bindings 17th- and 18th-century in-boards bindings (tight back/tight joint and hollow back/tight joint) 19th-century case binding The successful candidate will have the following skills: Deep knowledge and understanding of books as historic artifacts Demonstrable experience creating historically sympathetic bookbinding models Familiarity with traditional bookbinding tools and materials and their historical context Solid grounding in the history of the book Familiarity with ethics and current best practices in rare book conservation and the ability to relate them to historic structures Experience teaching bookbinding for a range of skill levels The course will be taught at Buffalo State or at Winterthur Museum in alternating years using facilities that include standard presses, sewing frames, and bookbinding tools. Purchase (as budgeted) and preparation of course materials are the responsibility of the instructor. The first course will take place May 28 – June 22, 2018, at Winterthur. Compensation will include a course fee and living and travel expenses.
