The Hamilton Kerr Institute for the conservation of easel paintings is a
postgraduate teaching institution with an international reputation for
the high quality of its programmes of instruction for students and
interns. It also operates an active and wide-ranging research programme
and is a department of the Fitzwilliam Museum.
The Institute undertakes the conservation of easel paintings for the
Fitzwilliam Museum, and also for external public and private
collections. Its clients include the University of Cambridge, the
National Trust and the Royal Collection.
Reporting to the Director, the role holder will undertake
income-generating practical conservation treatments as well as the
examination of easel paintings and polychrome sculptures. He/she will
also undertake practical studio tuition and will supervise up to ten
students, interns and contract workers alongside conservator colleagues.
The role holder assists in the running of the Institute as required and
collaborates with staff and post-graduate students on research. The
role-holder also gives advice on treatment options to clients and
prepares estimates and proposals for future projects. The post is
full-time (37 hours per week) and permanent.
The successful applicant will hold a first degree together with a
recognised postgraduate qualification in conservation. You will have an
established record in painting conservation practice and research.
Strong interpersonal skills are essential. Experience of
teaching/supervising conservation students and interns is desirable but
initial guidance will be available from senior staff.
