The Glenbow is one of the largest museums in western Canada with a collection 
of over a million objects, documents, photographs and artworks.  Reporting to 
the Manager, Collections, and working in accordance with the Glenbow Museum 
Conservation Policy, the Conservator, Paper is responsible for the preventive 
care and conservation of paper artifacts (including works on paper, objects 
which incorporate paper, and photographs) in storage, on exhibition and on 
loan.  The Conservator, Paper also provides training, advice and assistance to 
other staff and advice to the public regarding the conservation of paper 
artifacts. 

Specific Accountabilities

Technical: 
- Finds innovative and creative conservation solutions to enable the 
collections to be more broadly available to the public.
- Provides specialist advice and assistance for the preventive conservation of 
the collections in storage, on exhibit and on loan.
- Examines artifacts for suitability for exhibition and loan, and provides 
recommendations and advice for how artifacts may be exhibited/loaned. 
- Determines treatment needs and carries out conservation treatments on 
artifacts. 
- Completes and maintains conservation records and the conservation database, 
including photo-documentation, for the examination and treatment of collection 
artifacts.
- Works with exhibit teams, curators, designers and production staff to develop 
appropriate display for artifacts.
- Condition reports incoming exhibits and loans as required.
- Shares responsibility with the other conservators for environmental 
monitoring, including liaison with the Telus Convention Centre and liaison and 
backup support for pest control.
- Undertakes special projects and participate on project teams.
- Carries out research on questions which affect the conservation of the 
collections. 
- Shares responsibility for developing, maintaining and implementing the 
collections component of the Glenbow Emergency Preparedness Plan. 
- Shares responsibility with the other conservators for conservation 
representation on the Glenbow Health and Safety Committee. 
- Advises Glenbow staff on conservation aspects of dealing with art and 
artifacts within their job functions. 
- Provides conservation services on a fee basis to external clients. 

Administration:
- Shares responsibility with the other conservators for the development of the 
conservation budget.
- Maintains the paper lab and orders supplies as needed. 
- Shares responsibility with the other conservators for the maintenance of the 
MSDS files. 
- Develop and document conservation-related procedures. 
- Shares responsibility with the other conservators for the development and 
maintenance of the conservation library and the conservation reference files. 
- Determines the needs for term and casual conservation staff, including skill 
requirements. 
- Coordinates and supports term or casual staff working in the paper lab. 
- Performs other duties as assigned. 

Training:
- Provides care and handling training to museum staff, interns and volunteers. 
- Trains and supervises volunteers, interns.    

Public Service:
- Provides specialist conservation advice to other institutions and the public. 
- Conducts tours and presentations.

Qualifications
- Master`s degree in Art Conservation (Paper) or equivalent.
- 45 years experience in paper conservation.
- WHMIS Training.
- Experience in photography and digital image documentation.
- Accreditation in the Canadian Association of Professional Conservators (CAPC).
