*Modern and Contemporary Photography Workshop *

*The National Archives, London *

*Friday 16th February 2018*

*The Icon Photographic Materials Group is running an event on the
acquisition, identification, preservation and conservation of contemporary
photographic materials, in the context of museums and other institutions.
Talks will be presented by group committee members Vanessa
Torres, Ioannis Vasallos and Marta Garcia Celma, as well as guest speaker
Nicholas Burnett. *

Vanessa will discuss the acquisition of contemporary colour photography in
a museum environment. She will focus on the chromogenic process, as this is
the process most commonly found in collections. She will cover these
photographs’ deterioration and storage needs and present case studies for
their acquisition.

Ioannis’s presentation will be based on the specialist workshop 20th
Century Colour Photographs: Contemporary Practice, Identification and
Preservation, which was organised by the Getty Conservation Institute in
August 2017 and led by Sylvie Penichon, head of photograph conservation at
the Art Institute of Chicago. It will focus on the main colour processes
introduced during the 20th century and describe their materials,
characteristics and deterioration patterns, as well as discussing best
practices for their long-term preservation.

Marta will begin by discussing the Image Permanence Institute’s Digital
Print Workshop Identification and Preservation of Digital Prints, organised by
Daniel Burgue, Jennifer Burguer, Douglas Nishimura and Andrea Venosa, as
well as research into the conservation of Contemporary Photography with a
focus on reproduction as a conservation tool. She will look at technology,
image structure, supports, types of deterioration, and recommendations for
printing methods.

Lastly the attendees will divide into groups for two practical sessions.
They will take it in turns to look at 20th century colour photography
examples (with Nicholas Burnett) and the identification of digitally
printed photographs. A sample set will be provided for the second session,
and this can be taken away and kept.

30 places are available. Book on the Icon PhMG Eventbrite page:
