I am currently in my final year of the MA programme in Book & Paper
Conservation at the University of Amsterdam and I am doing research on an
early 20th-century photo album whose leaves display severe discolouration
that seems to have been caused by the adhesive used to mount the
photographs.

The paper leaves are coloured dark grey-brown and most (but not all) show
stains of a light yellow centre that fades into bright orange towards the
edges. The stains seem to have first affected the coloured paper leaves and
then migrated into the photographs as well as the transparent paper
interleaves. Solid white residues are also present on some of the stained
areas. However, these residues do not always coincide with the shape of the
stains.

So far I have not been able to find other objects that display this
interesting phenomenon, so I would like to reach out to the Consdistlist
community with the following questions:

1) Have you encountered any artefacts on coloured paper (either photo
albums or any other work on paper in a museum collection) with stains
caused by an adhesive?

2) What components of an adhesive available at the beginning of the 20th
century would interact with paper or with its dyes in such a manner?

3) Is it likely that this album is just a unique example?

Thank you for your time and I would be very grateful for any thoughts,
opinions, or suggestions you may have.

Best wishes,

Andra Danila
