At the Minnesota Historical Society (MNHS) in St. Paul, the de facto policy is to completely inventory the collections in the main History Center every 10 years. Spot checks and special inventories occur when deemed necessary. The goal for the 35,000 collections objects at the 26 sites around the state is to complete the inventory cycle every seven years. Sites under contract management with other entities may be inventoried more frequently depending on the contract terms.
MNHS is not a state agency and there is no state statute in Minnesota that requires museums to complete inventories. It's good museum policy and every eight years sounds reasonable, but that depends on the size of the collection, of course. Paul S. I?m interested to hear whether similar laws exist in other countries. How often do you have inventory counts, and who determines how often it is? Is it set by law or by policy? Thank you for your help, Efrat Haberman, Collection Manager Rishon Le-Zion Museum *???? ?????* ????? ?????, ??????? ????? ????? 03-9 <054-4455780>537021 \ 054-4455780 -- *Paul S.
