Starting in 2018 the conservation lab will be located temporarily at Fletcher Library on the West Campus. Upon completion of the Hayden Library Renovation, it will relocate to a purpose-designed, state-of-the-art conservation lab space in Hayden Library. Emerging conservation professionals are encouraged to apply! *Essential Duties* - Performs minor, intermediate and/or major conservation treatments of general collection materials designed to stabilize, conserve and protect holdings of the libraries in accordance with established conservation standards and methods. - Determines appropriate conservation treatment based on assessment of item with application of specialized and complex treatments specific to needs of general collection materials. - Applies conservation treatments including, but not limited to: paper and cloth repair to text and covers of bound volumes; hinging in, inserting reformatted text; paper repair using heat-set tissue or Japanese paper and paste; hinge tightening; spine repair or re-backing; sewing single or multiple section texts for re-casing or pamphlet binding in accordance with established standards and appropriateness of corrective treatment. - Reformats replacement text for missing pages from bound volumes. - Repairs single sheet items including, but not limited to: maps, charts, and architectural records by cleaning, flattening, humidifying, applying spray de-acidification, and/or paper repair as appropriate. - Evaluates a variety of media for conservation; repairs media in accordance with established standards, methods, and/or techniques. - Constructs a variety of custom-made enclosures for library materials. - Reviews and evaluates material for mass de-acidification, preservation, microfilming, and construction of custom enclosures performed by commercial vendors. - Oversees and coordinates shipments and maintains treatment records for vendors. - Updates item records in the Library on-line catalog system as appropriate. - Initiates searches in Library’s on-line catalog for bibliographic data as needed to complete inter-library loan requests for missing text material(s). - Maintains the unit’s on-line account details current and accurate. - Monitors and reviews journals, list-servs, and web sites as appropriate to maintain knowledge of developments within the conservation field. - Performs a variety of maintenance activities to provide for the ongoing order and cleanliness of the Preservation department. *Minimum Qualifications* Bachelor's degree in Fine Arts or related field AND one (1) year library conservation/preservation experience; OR, Any equivalent combination of experience and/or education from which comparable knowledge, skills and abilities have been achieved. *Desired Qualifications* - Demonstrated knowledge of item level conservation methods, techniques and standards. - Demonstrated knowledge of proper preservation treatment methods and guidelines of collection level care. - Demonstrated knowledge of the proper methods, handling and processing of archival items. - Demonstrated knowledge of the safe and proper handling and operation of conservation equipment, tools, instruments and chemicals. - Experience in operation and maintenance of various conservation tools and equipment. - Evidence of effective verbal, written and visual communication. - Experience in understanding and managing complex detailed records systems. - Ability to work effectively in stressful situation involving changing priorities and tight timelines. - Experience in accurately interpreting data and determining appropriate action. - Experience in identify appropriate sources and coordinate efforts to meet needs. - Experience in stimulating changes in individual, institutional, and corporate behaviors to create a more sustainable environment. - Experience in leading by example in communicating, participating and encouraging support of the institution’s sustainability programs. - Experience in applying 3D thinking to address complex conservation problems/requests.
