Subject: [Consdistlist] Storing Bronze Sculptures
.....We are planning to wrap the sculptures in archival Tyvek and store them in
boxes. Are there any issues that I should be aware of concerning long-term
storage of the pieces in crates?.....

Hello Marcia,
While boxes/crates have advantages and disadvantages depending on the
specific application, the only potential concern I would have beyond those is
the wrapping with Tyvek. While it has its uses it doesn't have the best
breathability compared to other materials such as muslin. I'm guessing that
there's possibly multiple items per box/crate and that's why it's being used or
possibly to protect from padding material? If not, do you need the Tyvek if
they're going into boxes/crates? Do you need the boxes/crates? Could the
sculptures be wrapped and labelled and then sit in storage? With Tyvek you
could have a build up of moisture or damaging substances/gases (depending on
accompanying materials) so another more breathable material may be desired.
Though depending on your storage environment this may not be desired and the
Tyvek may be the better option. Either way I'd include 3M anti-tarnish strips
and possibly some silica gel. Both are relatively inexpensive. There is also a
wrapping material for copper based objects that I'd seen, but not used, before.
I'd expect this would be more expensive but is another option.
