The following link is to a brief survey that is part of an interdisciplinary, collaborative research project being conducted by scientists and curators at George Washington University, the Library of Congress, and the Vitreous State Laboratory of The Catholic University of America; the research is supported by a Tier II grant in the NEH Preservation and Access Division's Research and Development Grant Program. The main objective of the study, entitled, "Glass at Risk: simple tools for detecting unstable glass in 19th century cultural heritage collections," is to create various types of analytical tools that will assist curators, conservators and scientists alike in the identification of at-risk glass heritage collection items. Ultimately, these tools will be organized into a "decision tree" that will allow end-users to better identify the risk posed by unstable 19th century glass in historical collections using, at a minimum, simple, low-cost techniques.
The survey is designed to help us assess the preservation needs of small to medium size cultural heritage institutions with regard to identification of unstable glass in their 19th century collections and archives. The results of the survey will be compiled as anonymous data that will aid the project and will eventually be available on the web in summary form. We will be happy to provide you with information about the results, when available.
