We have been using essential oils with diffusers to create scents in our dioramas for decades. These seem to be popular with the visitors and haven't drawn attention from people with sensitivities. Soon we will be hosting a travelling exhibit that includes a scent generator machine. We are wondering if these scents in our galleries might be a preservation issue, perhaps attracting insects or depositing oily residues on artifacts? I did a quick scan of the literature, but came up with nothing. Has anyone experienced negative effects directly attributable to the use of essential oils or scent generators in their galleries? We'd be interested in hearing from you.
