>>Hello:

After new HVAC equipment for a gallery has been installed, what is the
shortest AND longest period of time you have tested the new equipment
before bringing art and artifacts into the galleries?

Many thanks in advance for your feedback.

Generally with Minnesota Historical Society (MNHS) buildings, we already
have collections inside the spaces when new HVAC systems are installed or
existing systems are upgraded. We've never really had a chance to monitor
a space for any set period of time before installing collections.

If you can, it's important to wait until the system has gone through
complete testing and balancing. Commissioning the system is important, but
it's often not funded so it doesn't happen. It's critical to work with
your facilities engineers and get the exact temperature and RH set-points
that are actually programmed into the HVAC system so you can correlate your
monitoring data and give the engineers correct feedback. Is the system a
BAS? If so, you might be able to get access via the Internet so you can
see what the duct sensors are measuring and be able to better diagnose
problems. I would suggest monitoring with the Image Permanence Institute's
(IPI) PEM2 monitors and analyzing your data via eClimateNotebook (eCNB).
That way you can access outdoor data for comparison and provide dew point
statistics to the engineers which is essential for monitoring system
performance.

I'd say the minimum pre-installation time would be a month, and the ideal a
year so you can see the system responses to all seasonal changes.
