ICON - Gilding and Decorative Surface Group are running a 3 day workshop on 
Japanning Techniques

The workshop will be practical based and attendees will leave with a a japanned 
panel and a box.. There will be some handouts including the historical 
background and technical information .The focus of the course will be on the 
traditional 17th Century & 18th Century japanning techniques; a la Stalker & 
Parker, with a range of modern materials also explored. The ethics and best 
conservation practice will be addressed but all in an informal and relaxed 
atmosphere. The emphasis will be on practical application and having fun!



Tutor: Alex Schouvaloff

Alex is a specialist in conservation of decorative surfaces, with extensive 
experience in lacquer and japanning. He lectures at C &G Art School and was 
Senior Lecturer at London Metropolitan University and has an extensive 
clientele in the UK and abroad.
