XIVth Congress of the International Association of Book and Paper Conservators
(IADA) - Warsaw 2019

Date: 23-27 September 2019
Venue: POLIN Museum - Museum of the History of Polish Jews, Warsaw
Abstract submission deadline: 1 October 2018
Submit here: abstra...@iada-home.org

We are delighted to invite you to send paper proposals for the XIVth
International IADA Congress to be held from 23 to 27 September 2019 at the
Polin Museum in Warsaw, Poland (www.polin.pl). The congresses of the
International Association of Book and Paper Conservators (IADA) have provided a
quadrennial forum for the presentation of research and development in the field
of paper and book conservation since 1967. IADA’s XIVth Congress covers the
full range of topics in the conservation, preservation and research of the
World’s Paper Heritage and related disciplines.

IADA welcomes proposals on the latest developments in the profession, which
cover, but are not confined to, conservation decision-making, collection risk
management, surveys, sharing positive and negative outcomes of scientific
research and conservation projects, art technological studies (artist’s
materials and techniques), ethical considerations in conservation as well as
hands-on experiences.

While all abstracts are welcome, as the congress is open to any topic, we would
be interested to hear more about these questions:
- Bench conservator or middle manager: do you still have time for bench work or
are you finding yourself in the role of a middle manager, in charge of at least
one person and a studio having less time for actual treatments? What does it
imply in your daily work? How do you prioritise, organise your workflow and do
you have a strategic plan?

- Books as museum objects and the conservator’s role: as the status of the book
is slowly shifting towards museum objects, do you find that your profession has
changed?

- Materials and equipment used in conservation: do you use new materials for
treatments, temporary or permanent exhibitions? Are you testing them prior to
use? Are you using/developing new ways of testing materials? Have you noticed
important differences between the various batches of a product sent by a
manufacturer? How to deal with changes made by manufacturers to a product sold
under the same name?

- New technologies available to private conservators as well as institutions
and science labs.

Papers presenting a certain method or product should include an unbiased
description and discuss both pros and cons.
