The collections are important, not only for the individual manuscripts they contain, but for understanding the wider cultural and intellectual environment of the British monarchy from the Middle Ages to the nineteenth century. The collections contain mixed content types – manuscript books or codices, rolls and documents and letters bound into volumes. Some works are examples of the most excellent craftsmanship in book production, decoration and illumination. The British Library has signed an agreement with Gale Cengage Publishing to digitise approximately 2300 of these items to make them available online for researchers and members of the public.
