Digitisation Conservator (Royal & Kings Project)
SALARY £26,000
FULL TIME
Fixed-Term 2 years
St Pancras
The Royal and King’s Manuscript Collections are two of the major British
Heritage collections, being the manuscripts from the Old Royal Library which
George III presented to the new British Museum in 1757 (Royal Manuscripts), and
the collection subsequently formed by George III and given to the British
Museum in 1823 by George IV (King’s Manuscripts). The collections are
important, not only for the individual manuscripts they contain, but for
understanding the wider cultural and intellectual environment of the British
monarchy from the Middle Ages to the nineteenth century. The collections
contain mixed content types – manuscript books or codices, rolls and documents
and letters bound into volumes. Some works are examples of the most excellent
craftsmanship in book production, decoration and illumination. The British
Library has signed an agreement with Gale Cengage Publishing to digitise
approximately 2300 of these items to make them available online for researchers
and members of the public. Based in the Conservation department, but working as
part of the project team, the Digitisation Conservator will assess and prepare
the items to enable digitisation over a 2 year period.
You need to have either a degree in conservation or equivalent knowledge and
skills sets, and practical hands-on experience in conservation of books and
manuscripts for digitisation. A broad knowledge of available conservation

and interaction of a wide range of organic and inorganic materials. A good
