ICON Stone and Wall Paintings Group Evening Talk, Dr James Hales (UCL) will
talk on "Bat Damage in Churches", The Robing Room, Freemasons' Hall, 60
Great Queen Street, London, WC2B 5AZ 28th June 2018 (Samuel Whittaker)

Dr James Hales (UCL, Institute of Archaeology) will present his research
focusing on issues related to bats in churches and the complex interactions
that take place between bats, people and religious heritage. The talk will
summarize a recently completed five-year research project investigating
“damage” caused to the historic fabric of listed buildings in the UK by
resident bat populations. While the work focuses primarily on stone, wood
and metal surfaces, the research is of interest to conservators dealing
with other types of material exposed to bat droppings and urine.

Dr James Hales has for the past nineteen years worked at the UCL, Institute
of Archaeology. He is currently employed as a Senior Teaching Fellow with
responsibility for teaching and coordinating courses for the MA and MSc
programs in archaeological and heritage conservation. His specific areas of
responsibility are conservation materials science and analysis, preventive
conservation, onsite conservation and the remedial treatment of cultural
heritage material.
