Project Conservator
National Gallery of Art, Washington, DC

The National Gallery of Art is seeking to select a contract painting
conservator for a two-year period beginning in the fall of 2018. The
selected conservator will work in the NGA painting conservation department
under the supervision of the head of painting conservation on a large six
panel folding screen painted by Robert Winthrop Chanler in 1929. The 8¹ x
12¹ screen has suffered numerous tears and punctures, and exhibits
extensive cracking and areas of flaking paint. Each of the six panels has
canvas tacked to the recto and verso of a strainer, and both sides of the
screen are painted. Each panel will need to be locally consolidated,
carefully disassembled, tears repaired and the canvas reinforced,
reassembled, and tears and losses filled and inpainted.

The project conservator must possess skill in complex problem solving,
methods of canvas tear repair, and working with matte paint. Supported by
the resources of NGA curatorial, conservation, and scientific staff and
facilities, the project conservator will be responsible for the
examination, treatment, and documentation of the screen, coordinating
analysis, and assisting with
public outreach. The Chanler screen will be included in a 2021 exhibition
of the artist¹s work.

The contract award will pay the equivalent of approximately $83,000 or
higher per year depending upon the experience of the applicant. Note:
This contract makes use of federal funding and requires applicants for
this opportunity to be United States citizens. To be considered for this
contract conservator project, please submit the following information: a
current C.V., cover letter, and the names of 3 professional references
that may be contacted.

To request photographs, additional information about the project and to be
