SUMMARY

Full-time, fixed-term to 31 December 2021

Salary: GBP 26,000 per annum

Closing date for applications: 12 August 2018 at midnight

Interview dates: week commencing 20 August 2018

The British Library leads and collaborates in growing the world’s knowledge
base. We are engaged in a major partnership with the Qatar Foundation and
the Qatar National Library to digitise archival material relating to the
history of the Gulf and Arabic manuscripts selected from the Library’s
collections. We are a multi-disciplinary programme that includes
conservation, content specialists, translation, imaging etc., with external
funding committed until December 2021.

The partnership is approaching the completion of its second phase, being on
target to deliver 1,125,000 fully searchable and contextualised digital
images, freely available via the dedicated portal at www.qdl.qa. The third
phase (2019-2021) aims to add 800,000 images of similar but wider-in-range
material.

As a member of the conservation team you will provide a high standard and
appropriate level of conservation treatment for items prior to
digitisation, as well as liaising between different areas of the project to
ensure correct handling of collection items. You will need a degree in
book, paper or archives conservation studies or equivalent experience,
knowledge and skills. You will have recent practical hands-on experience
treating library/archive collections and a broad knowledge of preventive
and practical conservation approaches and risk management/assessments.

You will have strong communication and organisational skills, and proven
experience of successfully planning and managing your own work in order to
meet deadlines. You will have experience working with historic collections
and be committed to developing your understanding of our holdings related
to the Gulf and Arabic Science, and to expanding your knowledge of
conservation of this material.

In return we offer a competitive salary and a number of excellent benefits.
Our pension scheme is one of the most valuable benefits we offer, as our
staff can become members of the Alpha Pension Scheme where the Library
contributes 20.9%. Another significant benefit the Library provides is the
provision of a flexible working hours scheme which could allow you to work
your hours flexibly over the week and to take up to 5 days flexi leave in a
3 month period. This is on top of 25 days holiday from entry and public and
privilege holidays.

We are a Disability Confident employer, and make a commitment to recruit
and support disabled people. We guarantee an interview for disabled
candidates who meet the minimum (essential) requirements for a vacancy.
