My supervisor and I noticed some biological growth on an outdoor painted stainless steel sculpture and are currently gathering information as to how to move forward with this. The sculpture stands near trees that are dropping small amounts of resin onto the surface and the sculpture is near a road that may be kicking up different pollutants. There appears to be a direct correlation between where the resin is and where the black growth occurs. Mechanical action and washing does not remove the growth. We have done some testing and have found a 1% citric acid soln. buffered to a PH of 7 with ammonium hydroxide and D/2 biological solution to be the best; but we are wondering what experience others might have with biological growth and painted sculpture. The paint is a Benjamin Moore Aliphatic Acrylic Urethane paint.
