Call for Papers Book and Paper Group
AIC 47th Annual Meeting in New England, USA
May 13 - 17, 2019

The Book and Paper Group (BPG) of the American Institute for Conservation
of Historic and Artistic Works (AIC) welcomes abstracts for the 47th Annual
Meeting, to be held in Uncasville, CT, May 13 - 17, 2019.

The BPG sessions will include:

   - BPG session presentations
   - Joint presentation/discussion session with the Photographic Materials
Group (this will be one morning or afternoon session; see further
   information below)
   - Archives Conservation Discussion Group
   - Art on Paper Discussion Group
   - BPG business meeting & evening reception

Abstracts for BPG session presentations may be related to the overall 2019
AIC meeting theme, “New Tools, Techniques, and Tactics in Conservation and
Collection Care” or address any other aspect of the conservation of art on
paper, archival materials, bound volumes, manuscripts, or similar
materials. Abstracts are encouraged from anyone with an interest or role in
conservation, including current BPG members, other Specialty Group members,
and related professionals.

Abstracts for the Book and Paper Group (BPG) and Photographic Materials
Group (PMG) joint presentation/discussion session should be related to the
theme of “Loss compensation.” We as conservators are highly trained to
compensate for losses small and large so they integrate almost flawlessly
with their surroundings. We take into consideration qualities such as,
function and use, structural stability, and visual unity, but we also
consider many questions. Whom are these efforts truly for (the object,
other steward(s) of the object, public viewers, ourselves?) And, to what
extent may they impact the recipient(s) understanding and appreciation of
the object? This joint session of the Book and Paper Group and the
Photographic Materials Group will seek to explore various aspects of this
theme.

Joint session topics may include:

   - Ethical and theoretical considerations, such as:
   - To fill, or not to fill
      - Whom is the loss compensation for (the object, other steward(s) of
the object, public viewers, ourselves?) And, to what extent may loss
compensation impact the recipient(s) understanding and
appreciation of the
      object?
   - New approaches to loss compensation, such as ones that address the use
of new materials or innovative solutions
   - Techniques for compensation of especially vulnerable surfaces such as
photographs, digital prints, and art on paper
   - Compensation of losses in brittle and weak supports
   - Different approaches to the same problem and the decision making
   behind these choices

This topic is meant to be inclusive, so other interpretations or
perspectives also are welcome.

Final scheduling is being determined but all presentations will be between
15-25 minutes with additional time for questions. Further details will
follow.

How to submit an abstract: The online abstract submission portal is
accessible at: www.conservation-us.org/abstracts. When you have logged in,
choose "abstract submissions," which includes both talks and posters. AIC
allows authors to prioritize their application to participate in one of the
three session types: All-Attendee (General), Specialty Group, or Poster.
There is not a separate category for joint sessions this year. Any abstract
submitted to the BPG or PMG section automatically will be considered for
the joint BPG/PMG session.

The submission deadline for abstracts is September 15, 2018. Abstracts
should be 500 words maximum. Please contact Jen Hunt Johnson, BPG Program
Chair ([email protected]), or Eliza Spaulding, BPG Assistant Program
Chair ([email protected]), with any questions. We look forward to
your submissions!
